Why this exists
Modern cars increasingly ship with infotainment that's both worse than a five-year-old phone and more invasive than one. Built-in nav demands accounts. Manufacturer apps demand subscriptions. Updates introduce new ads on the screen you already paid for.
OffHUD is the opposite. It runs on a phone or tablet you already own, mounts somewhere in your sight line, and shows you what you actually want to know โ speed, time, heading, where you are on the map โ without asking anything of you in return.
Why a phone, not the car's screen
It would be technically possible to project OffHUD onto the car's built-in display via Android Auto or CarPlay. We chose not to. Those protocols are heavily mediated by Google and Apple, require app review, restrict what UI patterns you're allowed to use, and reintroduce exactly the kind of platform dependency we're trying to avoid.
Your phone is the HUD. Mount it where you can see it. It's simpler and it's yours.
Who's building this
A small effort. Built in the open, distributed via Obtainium, no company behind it. Contact and contribution info will land here when there's more to say.
